The association – a 501 c (6) public-private partnership – conducts export education, facilitates and leads trade missions, administers South Dakota’s State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) Grant, and offers confidential guidance to South Dakota companies on international trade matters.
About the Role
South Dakota Trade (SDT) is seeking a strategic and creative Director of External Affairs to lead the organization’s communications, public relations, and international policy outreach. This role drives the brand, voice, and influence of South Dakota Trade through digital channels, press, publications, and diplomatic engagement. The Director will produce high-quality content, manage external messaging, and support the CEO in building visibility with key audiences across government, media, and industry.

This position reports to the President & CEO of SDT.
Responsibilities and Duties
· Manage all external messaging including website, social media, newsletters, and press releases
· Lead public relations strategy and serve as media point of contact
· Draft policy memos, briefings, and strategic communications
· Coordinate with partners, embassies, and government agencies for diplomatic visits to South Dakota
· Develop marketing materials and storytelling content for programs and events
· Ensure brand consistency and elevate organizational visibility
· Manage the Midwest Agricultural Export Summit, SDT’s flagship event
· Assist in special projects, as assigned, by the President & CEO
· Ability to travel as required to execute the position
Qualifications
· Minimum 5 years of experience in public affairs, communications, or government relations
· Excellent storytelling abilities
· Experience managing communications strategies and high-level external relationships
· Pride in promoting all things South Dakota, and a sense of levity and team camaraderie and spirit.
· Curiosity and interest in international affairs, including how to weave interest with our clients and partners.
