Job Description

At VGHS, teachers focus on supporting students to read, write, think, and work as scientists. They use project-based learning and culturally responsive teaching practices to foster inquiry and enable authentic student work. In addition, because appreciation and stewardship of the natural world is a focus of VGHS, environmental literacy is integrated into the science curriculum at all grade levels.

Responsibilities

  1. Teach 3 Science courses (2 of which must include a lab) and 1 Natural Resource course (i.e. Environmental Science/Natural Resources; Forestry/Wildlife Management; Wildlife Science).
  2. Align coursework to NM STEM Ready Science Standards and NMPED CTE approved Programs of Study in the High School setting.
  3. Teach 4 PBL curricular units that focus on the 4P's: Place, phenomenon, problem, project.
  4. Guide students in scientific investigations and problem-solving that includes original research as well as collection, analysis, and representation of real data.
  5. Facilitate science instruction that includes fieldwork and interactions with experts.
  6. Leverage curriculum that explores the history and evolution of scientific thinking and innovation.
  7. Design projects, products, and authentic service-learning that lead to environmental stewardship.
  8. Provide an atmosphere which allows students to have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological growth.
  9. Responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program and for providing direct instruction in subject matter and skills that will result in student achievement in accordance with each student's ability.
  10. Evaluate pupils' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, and prepare progress reports.
  11. Identify pupil needs and make appropriate referrals. Develop strategies for Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  12. Plan and supervise class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, and/or other experiential activities. Guide students in learning from these activities.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Four year degree or higher
  • Valid Secondary Teaching License (or the ability to obtain such in proper time frames), with appropriate endorsements for the courses being taught issued by NMPED

Preferred:

  • At least one year’s previous teaching experience
  • Multilingual
  • Demonstrated knowledge for subjects/levels being taught
  • Ability to effectively communicate with parents, students, and staff
  • Endorsement in Special Education
